Løb og målsætninger og alkohol.
Jeg har lige set en video på nettet med en dansk løber der anbefaler at drikke en øl eller 2 efter behag hvis man har lyst. Og for et par uger siden kom der nogle unge løbere til mig og spurgte til om ikke også det er rigtigt at Arthur Lydiard anbefalede at man drikker en øl eller 2 om dagen.
Jo det er rigtigt at Arthur sagde at en Schnooner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schooner_%28glass%29) eller to om dagen er godt, for som han sagde der er masser af vitamin B i øl. Nu ved i sikkert godt at jeg er totalt fan af Arthur. Men han kunne ikke få mig til at drikke øl, ligesom jeg ikke gad spise alt det honning han anbefalede.
Arthur var ret speciel. Engang vi var ude at købe ind skulle vi rundt i 8 butikker for at se på salathoveder. Alle salathoveder vi fandt så fine ud, men Arthur sagde at han ikke ville spise dem, fordi han kunne se at de havde været på køl og nærmest var frosne. Arthurs kone og jeg var enige om at den rigtige grund var at hun havde sagt at vi skulle købe salat, og da Arthur ikke gad spise salat, ville han bestemme at ingen duede. Sådan var Arthur, og sådan var det med det han spiste og drak. Det han havde lyst til var sundt. Også med øl.
Da jeg løb gik der rygter om de Engelske langdistanceløbere. De var absolut verdens bedste i mindre betydende konkurrencer – satte verdensrekorder, men når de kom til de store konkurrencer gik det galt og ingen af dem kunne noget specielt. Rygtet var at når løberne kom til mesterskaberne og trappede træningen ned og skulle gå en uges tid som fuldtids professionelle (dengang havde alle løbere fuldtidsarbejde – hvordan skulle vi ellers få råd til at løbe) kom de til at kede sig og så gik de på druk. Og det kostede topformen.
Nu har jeg det ikke sådan at jeg tror at en øl eller to gør den store forskel for en løber. Men jeg ved at flere øl eller anden alkohol er gift for en løbers topform. Jeg ved ikke specielt hvorfor, men det var noget jeg hurtigt fandt ud af da jeg var teenager. Dels fandt jeg hurtigt ud af det på min egen krop, men tydeligst var det for nogle af mine løbekammerater. En enkelt der kaldte sig den bedste sejlede beruset rundt til en fest i konkurrenceperioden, og det var da tydeligt at hans sæson var spildt.
Men det er da streng at være ung og allerede anderledes fordi man vil være eliteløber og så ikke ville drikke sig fuld til festerne som de andre. Jeg var rimeligt konsekvent da jeg som 17 årig bestemte mig for at jeg ville være løber. Jeg kunne ligesågodt gøre det ordentligt. Jeg indkaldte mellem jul og nytår mine allerbedste kammerater til møde, og fortalte dem at jeg ville være Danmarks bedste løber og at jeg ville til Junior EM året efter. Det syntes de var en god ide, men de kiggede noget da jeg fortalte dem at en del af den disciplin der skulle til var at ja, jeg kunne komme til festerne men hvis de ville have mig med måtte de acceptere at jeg ikke rørte noget alkohol fra 1. januar og at det skulle vare indtil efter sæsonen. Jeg skulle ikke moppes mere end højest nødvendigt så jeg bad dem om at vi holdt mine ambitioner blandt os selv, og efterfølgende oplevede jeg da totalt respekt fra mine kammerater. Og ja jeg satte 7 danske ungdomsrekorder og kvalificerede mig til Junior EM.
Det var nok ikke den manglende øl der gjorde forskellen, men en stor del af min disciplin for at kunne motivere mig til lidt ekstraordinær træning, var at jeg bare ikke ødelagde den træning jeg havde lavet. Det ville bare være for åndssvagt. Og efterfølgende i mine allerbedste sæsoner drak jeg ikke alkohol i 8 mdr fra 1 januar til 1. september. Måske underligt når man ejede et værtshus. Ja bestemt.
Jeg tror at Arthur synes jeg var noget specielt underligt, men jeg kunne se og høre på ham da han fik forklaringen, at han havde respekt for, at jeg ikke ville dele øl med ham.
